Charedi Divide Reaches New Heights
Continuing an extended period of great tension between the two factions of United Torah Judaism in several cities(Betar,Elad,Jerusalem etc)and specifically here in Bet Shemesh ,Secretary General of Aguda Chanoch Zeibert, in an attempt to finally resolve the Bet Shemesh crisis, sent an extremely sharp letter to MK Moshe Gafni sharply criticizing Degel’s insistence on holding on to the “stolen” seat in the city council that was meant to be returned to Aguda from Degel-Shas immediately following the municipal elections as spelled out in an agreement that Abutbul himself signed but refuses to implement as he asserts that he is instructed not to by Gedolei Yisrael. The Degel “majority” has great implications as it is legally unclear whether the Aguda members can go against the “majority” and join the coalition and receive the position of deputy mayor especially leading up to the City Council meeting on Wednesday in which these matters as well as the formation of committees (vaadot)are meant to be established, and can affect the very existence of the mayor’s coalition!
In the letter he writes that it was always obvious that each faction of the joint list was meant to negotiate with the mayor independently and follow the rulings of its Rabbis and one faction has no right to decide for the other and force the other by means of a “majority” to act against their (Agudas) rabbinic board and not enter the coalition.
In conclusion he demands that as soon as possible and no later than within 72 hours(Wednesday December 19), the four representatives of Degel plus Abutbul(Degel-Shas) meet to “unbind” Abutbul and allow the Aguda representative who is next in line(Frankel) to take his place in the council and this will allow an even split of 4-4 in the joint list so each party can go it’s own way without any legal challenges
